A coalition of more than 200 Alberta small business owners has formally petitioned the provincial government for tax relief, citing dramatically increased operating costs that threaten the viability of local enterprises across the province.

The petition, delivered to the Alberta Legislature on Wednesday, calls for a temporary reduction in the small business tax rate from 2% to 1% and an expansion of the Small Business Deduction threshold to help offset rising costs of rent, utilities, and supply chain expenses.

Mounting Pressures

“We’re being squeezed from every direction,” said Rajiv Patel, owner of a family restaurant in Kensington and one of the petition’s organizers. “Our rent has gone up 30% in two years, our food costs are through the roof, and we’re trying not to pass all of that on to our customers.”

According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), 43% of Alberta small businesses reported that their operating costs increased by more than 15% over the past year, with energy costs and commercial rent identified as the primary drivers.

Government Response

A spokesperson for Alberta’s Ministry of Jobs, Economy, and Trade said the government is “aware of the challenges facing small businesses” and is reviewing the petition.

“Alberta already has one of the most competitive small business tax environments in Canada,” the statement read. “We continue to look at ways to support job creators across the province.”

Opposition members have called for immediate action, with NDP finance critic Shannon Phillips describing the situation as “a crisis that demands more than talking points.”

Local Impact

In Calgary alone, the Better Business Bureau reports that small business closures have increased by 18% compared to the same period last year. Business owners say that without intervention, more closures are inevitable.

“These aren’t just businesses — they’re the backbone of our communities,” said Patel. “When the corner shop closes, the whole neighbourhood feels it.”
