CALGARY — Hundreds of Calgarians gathered on Tuesday evening for a peaceful community protest in the city’s downtown core, adding their voices to a growing national conversation about justice, equality, and community solidarity.

The demonstration, organized through social media by local community groups, drew participants from across the city who marched through the streets carrying signs and chanting messages of unity. The crowd was diverse in age, background, and ethnicity, reflecting Calgary’s multicultural character.

A Peaceful Demonstration

Organizers emphasized the peaceful nature of the protest from the outset, with volunteer marshals guiding the march route and ensuring participants remained on sidewalks and designated crossing areas. Calgary Police Service officers accompanied the march, reporting no incidents or arrests throughout the evening.

“This is about community,” said organizer Danielle Freemantle. “We wanted to show that Calgary cares, that we stand together, and that our voices matter. The turnout tonight proves that.”

Photographic Documentation

WestNet News photographer Kyra Thompson was on the ground throughout the event, capturing the moments of solidarity, the handmade signs, and the faces of Calgarians who came out despite the December cold to make their voices heard. Her photographs document not just a protest, but a community coming together in a shared expression of values.

“What struck me most was the sense of purpose,” Thompson said. “People weren’t angry — they were determined. They came out because they believe in something bigger than themselves, and that’s worth documenting.”

The protest concluded with a candlelight vigil at Olympic Plaza, where several community leaders spoke about the importance of continued dialogue and civic engagement. Participants were encouraged to channel their energy into local volunteer work and community organizing.
