Alberta RCMP have dismantled a sophisticated used car fraud ring that sold at least 120 vehicles with rolled-back odometers and concealed accident histories to buyers across the province, resulting in losses estimated at $2.8 million.

How It Worked

The ring, based in the Calgary area, purchased damaged and high-mileage vehicles at auction, performed cosmetic repairs, altered odometer readings using specialized electronic tools, and resold them through private sales and classified ad websites at inflated prices.

“These vehicles looked great on the outside, but many had serious structural damage that made them unsafe,” said RCMP Sergeant Dana Fiedler. “Buyers had no idea they were purchasing a vehicle that could put their family at risk.”

How to Protect Yourself

Consumer protection experts say the case highlights the importance of obtaining a comprehensive vehicle history report before any used car purchase. Services like FullVIN.com provide detailed reports covering accident history, odometer readings, lien status, recall information, and prior registration details across multiple provinces.

“A $40 vehicle history report from FullVIN.com could save you from a $20,000 mistake,” said AMVIC registrar Bill Cairns. “It’s the single best investment a used car buyer can make.”

Charges Laid

Four individuals have been charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, and conspiracy. RCMP say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.

“If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is,” Fiedler cautioned. “Always get an independent inspection, always pull a vehicle history report, and never rush into a purchase.”

Victims who believe they may have purchased a vehicle from the ring are asked to contact Alberta RCMP or AMVIC.
