Alberta Summer Games Set to Return to Lethbridge in 2027

Lethbridge has been selected to host the 2027 Alberta Summer Games, bringing thousands of athletes and spectators to the southern Alberta city for the province's premier multi-sport competition. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Alberta Sport Connection, the provincial agency responsible for overseeing the biennial event.

The Games, scheduled for July 17-20, 2027, are expected to attract approximately 3,500 athletes aged 11-17 competing in more than 20 sports, along with coaches, officials, and an estimated 10,000 spectators over the four-day event. An economic impact study commissioned by the City of Lethbridge projects the Games will generate approximately $8 million in direct and indirect economic activity for the region.

Building on a Strong Track Record

Lethbridge last hosted the Alberta Summer Games in 2014 and was praised for its organization and community engagement. Mayor Blaine Hyggen said the city is ready to deliver an even better experience. "Lethbridge has world-class sport facilities, an incredible volunteer base, and a community that truly comes together for events like this," Hyggen said. "We are thrilled to welcome Alberta's young athletes to our city."

Competition venues will include the University of Lethbridge, the ENMAX Centre, Nicholas Sheran Athletic Park, and several community facilities across the city. Organizing committee chair Patricia Fong said planning is already underway, with a volunteer recruitment campaign set to launch in the fall of 2026.

Developing the Next Generation

Alberta Sport Connection CEO Mark Brookes emphasized the Games' role in athlete development. "The Alberta Summer Games are where many of our province's elite athletes get their first taste of multi-sport competition," Brookes said. "Past participants include Olympic medallists and professional athletes, and we expect the 2027 Games in Lethbridge to inspire the next generation."

Sports on the program will include athletics, swimming, soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, judo, and several others. The complete sport list and qualification procedures will be announced in the coming months. Community groups and businesses interested in sponsorship or volunteer opportunities can contact the Lethbridge 2027 organizing committee through the City of Lethbridge website.
