University of Calgary Dinos Capture Canada West Basketball Championship

The University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team captured the Canada West championship on Saturday night, defeating the UBC Thunderbirds 78-74 in a dramatic final at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium. The victory marks the program's first conference title since 2014 and sends the Dinos to the U Sports national championship tournament in Halifax later this month.

Fourth-year guard Marcus Williams led the way with 24 points and seven assists, including a crucial three-pointer with 1:42 remaining that gave Calgary a lead they would not relinquish. Williams was named tournament MVP after averaging 21 points per game over the three-day event.

A Season of Redemption

The championship caps a remarkable turnaround for a program that finished with a losing record just two seasons ago. Head coach Dan Dwyer credited the team's depth and defensive intensity for the breakthrough. "These guys have worked incredibly hard to get to this point," Dwyer said after the game. "They believed in the process, they stayed together through some tough losses early in the season, and tonight they showed what they're capable of."

The Dinos trailed by eight points at halftime before mounting a second-half rally fuelled by a stifling full-court press that forced 14 UBC turnovers in the final two quarters. Rookie forward Aiden Okafor contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds, while fifth-year centre James Mackie anchored the defence with four blocked shots.

Looking Ahead to Nationals

The Dinos will enter the U Sports national championship as the second seed from the West. Dwyer said the team will use the next two weeks to prepare for what he expects will be a highly competitive field. "We've earned our spot, but we're not satisfied," he said. "The goal from day one has been to compete for a national title, and now we have that opportunity."

The U Sports men's basketball championship will be held March 20-22 at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Calgary will face the OUA champion in the quarterfinals. Ticket information for Dinos fans wishing to travel is available through the University of Calgary athletics website.
