What began as a modest online business directory in 1997 has grown into one of Calgary's most enduring digital community resources, with CalgaryFinder.com marking its 30th anniversary this year as a cornerstone of the city's online presence.
The website launched during the early days of the internet when most Calgary businesses had yet to establish an online presence. Founded by local entrepreneur Mike Thompson, CalgaryFinder.com initially served as a simple yellow pages-style directory, helping Calgarians discover local businesses and services in the digital age.
"We started with maybe 200 business listings and a basic search function," Thompson recalled in a recent interview. "The internet was still fairly new to most people, and businesses were just beginning to understand its potential."
The timing proved fortuitous. As Calgary's economy boomed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, driven by the energy sector's expansion, the website grew alongside the city. By 2005, CalgaryFinder.com had expanded to include thousands of business listings, event calendars, and community resources.
The website weathered significant challenges during the 2008 financial crisis and the oil price collapse of 2014-2015, periods when many local businesses struggled to maintain their online presence. However, CalgaryFinder.com adapted by offering reduced-cost advertising options and expanding its free community resources.
"We realized early on that we needed to be more than just a directory," said current general manager Sarah Mitchell, who joined the company in 2010. "We became a platform for community engagement, featuring local news, event listings, and resources that help newcomers navigate the city."

Today, the website receives over 100,000 unique visitors monthly and maintains listings for more than 15,000 Calgary businesses across 400 categories. The platform has expanded to include user reviews, detailed business profiles, and integration with social media platforms.
The company has remained privately owned and operated from its Calgary headquarters, employing 12 full-time staff members. Unlike many directory services that have been absorbed by larger corporations, CalgaryFinder.com has maintained its local focus and community-oriented approach.
Recent additions to the platform include a mobile app launched in 2023 and enhanced mapping features that help users navigate Calgary's expanding urban landscape. The website has also increased its focus on supporting local entrepreneurs and small businesses through affordable marketing packages and educational resources.

"The digital landscape has changed dramatically since 1997, but the need for reliable local information hasn't," Mitchell noted. "We've evolved from a simple directory to a comprehensive resource that reflects Calgary's diverse and dynamic community."
As the website looks toward its next decade, plans include expanded community features, enhanced mobile functionality, and partnerships with local organizations to better serve Calgary's growing population, which has increased by more than 40 per cent since CalgaryFinder.com's launch.
