I was troubled by Justice Minister Mickey Amery’s recent statement suggesting that, when considering MAID, “people with severe depression may struggle to fully appreciate the implications of their choices.”

If this perspective is informed by his lived experience, then I sincerely empathize. However, if it is not, I would urge caution in speaking on behalf of those facing such complex and deeply personal challenges without direct understanding. What’s next? Limiting women’s reproductive rights because women also “struggle to fully appreciate the implications of their choices?”
