Alberta RCMP have arrested and charged a 30-year-old Airdrie resident in connection with a troubling series of sexual assaults targeting women at major retail stores across the Calgary region.
The suspect, arrested at his home Tuesday without incident, now faces six counts of sexual assault stemming from incidents that began in mid-August and continued through mid-September. He is scheduled to appear in court next week.
Pattern of Similar Incidents
According to RCMP Staff Sergeant Steven Browne, the assaults followed a consistent pattern. The first reported incident occurred August 12 at a Walmart in Airdrie, where a woman was groped while shopping. The suspect fled the location without confrontation or verbal exchange.
A second assault at the same Walmart location followed 12 days later. Two additional incidents occurred September 17 at a No Frills grocery store, also in Airdrie. Two further assaults were reported to Calgary police — one at a Walmart and another at a Shoppers Drug Mart in the city.
Investigation and Evidence
Investigators determined the suspect was captured on video surveillance during each alleged offence. Notably, he did not wear a mask during any of the incidents, making identification straightforward for authorities.
"(The man) did not say anything and departed the business without a confrontation," Browne stated at a Friday news conference. "We have no indication of motive at this time."
Support for Victims
RCMP is actively working to identify two women assaulted at the No Frills location and is urging them to come forward. The service has offered support through the regional victim services society to all affected individuals.
"No woman wants to be inappropriately touched in any fashion," Browne emphasized. "It's a criminal offence and we take that at the highest priority."
The arrests underscore ongoing concerns about personal safety in retail environments. Calgarians and Albertans frequenting these stores are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
