Alberta celebrated its 121st anniversary as part of Canada on Sunday with thousands of residents gathering across the province to mark the historic milestone, including a major celebration at Calgary's Heritage Park Historical Village.
The festive occasion featured an address by Premier Danielle Smith, who painted an optimistic picture of Alberta's trajectory and its role on the world stage. "The world needs what Alberta has to offer — our energy, our resources, our skills, and our expertise are in high demand," Smith told attendees at the Calgary event.
The dual celebrations took place at the Alberta Legislature grounds in Edmonton and Heritage Park in Calgary, while 69 municipalities across the province hosted their own Alberta Day festivities to commemorate the province's entry into Confederation on September 1, 1905.
Community Spirit Despite Weather
Despite early rainfall and cooler temperatures, thousands turned out to celebrate Alberta's heritage and culture. Heritage Park, which hosted the event for the third consecutive year in partnership with the provincial government, welcomed families and community members from diverse backgrounds.
"We love seeing the crowds here, the kids, all the different cultures," said Maria Martiniello, director of food, beverage and events at Heritage Park. "We have so much programming here for everyone to enjoy and I know for our staff, we love having everyone's smiley faces today and the camaraderie."
Ceremonial Moments Mark the Day
The Heritage Park celebration featured a dramatic opening with a flyover by two Royal Canadian Air Force helicopters, setting the tone for Smith's remarks to the assembled crowd. The Premier thanked Albertans for their participation in the day's festivities across the province, emphasizing the importance of coming together to celebrate shared values and accomplishments.
The events showcased Alberta's cultural diversity and community spirit, with programming designed to engage residents of all ages and backgrounds throughout the day.
