Alberta's thriving craft distillery scene just scored a major victory. Starting last week, Costco liquor stores across Alberta began stocking premium whiskies from seven homegrown producers — marking a significant milestone for an industry that has quietly built an impressive reputation for quality and innovation.

The rollout spans 15 Costco locations, from Medicine Hat in the south to Grande Prairie in the north, each featuring a curated selection of locally crafted spirits. This is no small feat in the competitive retail landscape. Costco carries roughly 4,000 unique items per store — a far cry from the 100,000+ products found in traditional big box retailers — making shelf space extraordinarily competitive and hard-won.

A Treasure Hunt for Whisky Lovers

"If you're into Alberta whisky, you're gonna see it's slightly different at each Costco," said Bryce Parsons, president of the Alberta Craft Distillers Association and co-founder of True Wild Distilling. "Every Costco is a little bit different — a bit of a treasure hunt."

At the Costco Tsuut'ina location in southwest Calgary, shoppers can explore bottles from Wild Life Distillery in Canmore, Bridgeland Distillery in Calgary, Anohka Distillery near Stony Plain, and Eau Claire Distillery in Diamond Valley. The Heritage Costco in Calgary features True Wild, while The Maligne Range from Jasper and Burwood from Calgary round out the provincial showcase.

Brian Lerner, manager of Costco Tsuut'ina's liquor department, notes the timing couldn't be better. "People know what they want but this allows them to explore something new," he said. "People want to buy things that have been made and produced with care from the people around us. They make fantastic products here in Alberta."

Consumer Appetite for Local is Growing

The shift reflects a broader consumer trend toward supporting regional producers and artisanal goods. Albertans increasingly prioritize knowing where their purchases come from and who benefits from the sale.

Participating distilleries aren't leaving success to chance. Representatives from each producer have been conducting in-store tastings and educating Costco staff about their products — turning the retail expansion into a genuine educational initiative rather than simple shelf placement.

"I think overall, people find it extremely exciting and very happy that someone like Costco — who has a great reach to Albertans — that they're supporting an initiative like this, at this time," Parsons said.

Building on New Provincial Standards

The Costco partnership arrives just as Alberta's craft spirits sector gains formal recognition. Earlier this year, the Alberta government introduced the Alberta Whisky Act, establishing official requirements for the Alberta Whisky designation — similar to the Canadian Whisky branding framework. The Alberta Craft Distillers Association celebrated the new branding guidelines at a launch event in July, where Costco representatives were present to signal their support.

For Alberta's distillers, the timing is particularly strategic. The partnership provides a major sales platform heading into the busy holiday season — and arrives amid uncertainty about potential U.S. trade restrictions on Canadian alcohol products.

The shelf space represents validation of quality and a genuine competitive advantage in an increasingly crowded craft spirits marketplace. For Costco shoppers, it's an opportunity to explore homegrown excellence.
