Alberta's unprecedented wave of recall petition activity has officially ended, with Elections Alberta confirming Wednesday that no active recall campaigns remain against any legislators for the first time since last October.

The two remaining petitions—one targeting Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie, leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, and another against St. Albert NDP Member Marie Renaud—have both been dismissed, Elections Alberta announced in a statement.

The recall campaign against Renaud was voluntarily withdrawn by its organizers. Meanwhile, Guthrie's petition was deemed invalid after supporters failed to submit required signatures by the Wednesday deadline.

The Challenge Ahead

Both campaigns faced a steep climb. Alberta's recall mechanism requires organizers to gather signatures equivalent to 60 per cent of all votes cast in the respective constituency during the last provincial election—an extraordinarily high threshold that proved insurmountable for either effort.

Elections Alberta had formally approved both petition applications on March 6, giving organizers exactly three months to meet their signature targets. Neither succeeded.

What Sparked the Petitions

Renaud's recall petition cited concerns about education policy direction, while the campaign targeting Guthrie referenced longstanding legal matters and disputes over constituency service. Both represented broader political frustrations that failed to gain sufficient grassroots traction to advance to a recall vote.

Larger Pattern

Since recall petitions first became available in Alberta last October, a total of 28 have been filed. All 28 have either been withdrawn, deemed invalid, or failed to achieve the required signatures. None have successfully triggered a recall election.

The high bar for recalls—set deliberately by the province—continues to demonstrate why this mechanism remains largely theoretical in Alberta politics despite the high-profile nature of recent campaigns.
