The Calgary Flames came tantalizingly close to a statement victory against the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks Thursday night, ultimately falling 3-2 in overtime at Scotiabank Saddledome before a crowd of 18,347.

Ducks forward Trevor Zegras scored the overtime winner at 2:47 of the extra frame, beating Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom with a perfectly placed wrist shot from the left circle. The loss drops Calgary to 38-32-12 on the season as they continue their push for a Western Conference playoff berth.

"We played a really solid game against the best team in our division," said Flames head coach Ryan Huska. "Getting a point out of it is important, but we know we need to start winning these games in regulation if we want to make the playoffs."

Calgary opened the scoring midway through the first period when Elias Lindholm capitalized on a power-play opportunity, firing a one-timer past Ducks netminder John Gibson at 12:34. The goal was Lindholm's 28th of the season and extended his point streak to five games.

Anaheim responded in the second period with goals from Mason McTavish and Leo Carlsson just 1:47 apart, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. McTavish's goal came on the power play at 8:22, while Carlsson scored at even strength following a turnover in the Flames' defensive zone.

The Flames showed resilience in the third period, with veteran forward Blake Coleman tying the game 2-2 at 14:15. Coleman's goal came after sustained pressure in the Ducks' zone, with assists credited to Jonathan Huberdeau and Rasmus Andersson.

"We stuck with it and found a way to get back in the game," Coleman said. "That's the kind of character we need to show every night. It's disappointing not to get the second point, but we'll take what we can get and move on to the next one."

Markstrom was stellar in net for Calgary, making 31 saves in the losing effort. Gibson was equally impressive for Anaheim, stopping 29 shots to help preserve the Ducks' four-point lead atop the Pacific Division standings.

The overtime loss keeps Calgary in the thick of the Western Conference wild-card race, currently sitting three points out of the second wild-card spot with 20 games remaining in the regular season. The Flames have earned points in four of their last six games but continue to struggle with consistency in crucial matchups.

With the victory, Anaheim improves to 44-23-5 and extends their lead over the second-place Vancouver Canucks to four points. The Ducks have now won seven of their last 10 games and appear poised for their first division title since 2014.

The Flames will look to rebound when they host the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night in the second game of a crucial home-and-home series against their provincial rivals. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Scotiabank Saddledome.
