A Calgary girls' hockey coach facing serious charges related to alleged internet luring of children has been granted bail despite strong objections from Crown prosecutors.

Justice Bruce Fraser delivered a stern warning to Malik Buccini-Small during Thursday's proceedings at the Calgary Courts Centre, making clear this represents his sole opportunity for pre-trial freedom.

"I am going to release you over the Crown's objections. I'm going to give you one chance to stay out of jail pending trial or a resolution to the case," Fraser told the accused from the bench.

The justice emphasized that any violations of release conditions would result in immediate return to custody.

The bail hearing, which took place over two days this week, featured arguments from both defence counsel Matt Deshaye and Crown prosecutor Sarah Goard-Baker regarding Buccini-Small's suitability for judicial interim release.

Case Proceeds Through Courts

The charges stem from allegations involving the internet luring of young children, though specific details of the case remain subject to publication restrictions typical in matters involving minors.

Defence and Crown attorneys presented their respective positions during Tuesday's initial hearing before Fraser reserved his decision until Thursday's session.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about online safety for young athletes and the vulnerability of children in sports programs across Alberta.

Court proceedings are expected to continue as the matter works its way through the Calgary court system. The accused must comply with strict release conditions while awaiting trial or potential resolution of the charges.
