Calgary Police Service Chief Katie McLellan will continue leading the force for another two years, with her appointment now extended through mid-2028.

McLellan stepped into the interim chief role in May 2025 following the resignation of former chief Mark Neufeld. What began as a temporary appointment has now become permanent after what Calgary Police Commission Chair Amtul Siddiqui described as "a year‑long interview."

"Over the past year, Chief McLellan has led with steadiness, care and integrity through a demanding and complex period for policing in Calgary," Siddiqui said in announcing the extension.

The commission chair praised McLellan's leadership style, noting her impact on both police personnel and the broader Calgary community.

"She has shown heart and humility and has earned the respect and confidence of the people she serves every day," Siddiqui explained. "We have heard from employees and the community alike that her leadership has made a meaningful difference — not only in direction and decision‑making, but in how people feel heard, respected and supported."

The two-year extension will allow McLellan to build on initiatives she has already launched while establishing long-term strategies for Calgary's police service. Siddiqui emphasized that the extended timeline will enable the chief to "both complete the work she has started and set the course for the future of policing in Calgary."

McLellan's permanent appointment comes during a period of ongoing challenges and changes in Canadian policing, with forces across the country adapting to evolving community safety needs and public expectations.

The Calgary Police Service serves approximately 1.4 million residents across Calgary and surrounding areas.
