Calgary police have confirmed a tragic death in a northeast residence this week, following an investigation into a welfare check that revealed two bodies in a Templegreen Place N.E. home Wednesday afternoon.
Autopsy results released Thursday determined that a seven-year-old boy died from homicide, with his 47-year-old mother identified as responsible for his death. The mother's death has been classified as a suicide by investigators.
The discovery came after emergency responders were called to conduct a welfare check at the residence. Upon arrival, Calgary police and paramedics found both the child and the woman deceased inside the home.
"This is a tragic and traumatic event," said Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of Calgary Police Service's homicide unit. "We recognize that this affects not only the family of the victims, but members of the wider community as well."
The incident has sent shockwaves through the northeast Calgary neighbourhood. Community members struggling with the news may find support through local resources and counselling services available across the city.
Calgary police have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. The CPS homicide unit continues its investigation into the matter.
