A fatal collision on a northeastern Alberta highway has claimed the life of a local resident, prompting RCMP to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The collision occurred near the intersection of Highway 55 and Highway 866 close to Lac La Biche on Monday evening at approximately 9:15 p.m. According to RCMP, a semi-truck travelling eastbound crossed into the oncoming lane, striking a pickup truck head-on.
The pickup truck driver, a 36-year-old Lac La Biche resident who was alone in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders and RCMP officers attended the crash site immediately after the collision was reported.
The semi-truck driver, identified as a 51-year-old Edmonton man, escaped the crash without injury and required no medical treatment. Investigators are continuing to examine the factors that led to the vehicles colliding on the highway.
The incident marks another tragic reminder of the dangers posed by head-on collisions on Alberta's provincial highways.
