A fatal collision has brought renewed attention to the hazards drivers face when forced to pull over on Calgary's busiest corridors. One person is dead after being struck by a truck and trailer on northbound Deerfoot Trail near 17th Avenue S.E. on Tuesday afternoon, Calgary police confirmed.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene just after 1 p.m. to find the victim unresponsive. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

What Happened

According to Traffic Unit Staff Sergeant Andy Woodward, the victim had pulled onto the right shoulder to change a flat tire when the collision occurred. The offending vehicle—a truck and trailer—was in the process of changing lanes, likely attempting to exit at the 17th Avenue off-ramp, when it struck the person on the shoulder.

"Early indications would indicate that the offending vehicle was in the process of changing lanes and we believe was probably looking to come off the Deerfoot at the 17th Avenue turn off," Woodward told media at the scene.

The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene and fully cooperated with police. No charges have been laid at this time as the investigation continues.

The Dangerous Reality of Roadside Breakdowns

Staff Sergeant Woodward emphasized the inherent risks drivers face when stopping on major thoroughfares like Deerfoot Trail. "The hard shoulder itself is nowhere near as big as a lane on the carriageway," he explained. "Nine times out of 10, if somebody is looking to change a wheel on the driver's side of the vehicle, they are going to be exposed to the lane that's actually on the carriageway itself."

This tragedy reflects broader safety concerns on Calgary's highways. Council has been actively seeking solutions to combat rising traffic fatalities and pedestrian deaths across the city.

How to Stay Safe

If you experience a breakdown and must pull over, Woodward recommends attempting to reach the other side of the metal barriers along Deerfoot Trail if possible. Alternatively, drivers can call Calgary police for assistance—officers will dispatch an available unit to provide backup and increase visibility while you work.

For roadside emergencies or breakdowns requiring police support, residents can reach emergency services by dialing 911.
