In one of the most electrifying CFL finishes of the season, the Edmonton Elks mounted a spectacular comeback Monday to defeat the Calgary Stampeders 38-28 on Labour Day, leaving a crowd of 16,346 at McMahon Stadium in shock.
Trailing by 18 points in the third quarter, Edmonton's high-powered offence shifted into overdrive, scoring an astounding 24 points in the final 10 minutes of play to claim their third consecutive victory.
The Turning Point
With just over four minutes remaining, Edmonton running back Justin Rankin punched in a 50-yard rushing touchdown, and Vincent Blanchard's convert gave the Elks their first lead of the contest. Calgary's offence, unable to muster any offensive momentum in the closing moments, failed to reach scoring position as time expired.
"We showed incredible resilience," said Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo, who completed 17 of 31 passes for 181 yards and two touchdown throws. "This team refuses to quit."
An Offensive Barrage
Edmonton's fourth-quarter explosion featured touchdown receptions from Kaion Julien-Grant and Austin Mack, alongside rushing scores from ShunDerrick Powell and Cole Snyder. Blanchard proved invaluable, adding a 52-yard field goal and five convert points.
The Stampeders, led by quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., couldn't match Edmonton's intensity down the stretch. Adams completed 15 of 29 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns, while receivers Jalen Philpot and Clark Barnes caught scoring passes. Running back Quincy Vaughn added a short-yardage touchdown, and kicker Rene Paredes contributed three converts and two field goals (36 and 42 yards).
Division Implications
The victory solidifies Edmonton's grip on the West Division lead at 9-3, one game ahead of the Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-4). Calgary remains in last place at 5-7, tied with Winnipeg and B.C. at the division's bottom.
The Elks' ability to overcome massive deficits has become their trademark this season—they previously erased a 16-point deficit against Winnipeg in their previous outing. As Edmonton continues its climb toward playoff contention, Calgary faces mounting pressure to reverse their early-season slide.
