An incident at Jasper Place High School in Edmonton's west end Friday resulted in one student being rushed to hospital in critical condition, prompting an immediate lockdown of the school and neighbouring campuses.

Edmonton police responded to the school around noon, with the lockdown initiated at approximately 12:15 p.m. as a precautionary measure. Nearby schools were also secured during the response.

Emergency Health Services confirmed a patient was transported from the school in what they described as "unstable, potentially life-threatening condition." Police have not disclosed the specific nature of the incident, though investigators say a suspect was located in the vicinity and taken into custody shortly after.

"There is no additional threat to students or the public," police stated in their initial assessment.

The school, which serves over 3,000 students, dismissed early as a result of the incident. The Edmonton Public School Board emphasized that student and staff safety remained the top priority throughout the emergency response.

Student Reaction to Unexpected Lockdown

For many students, the incident came without warning. Sixteen-year-old Akaash Dhaliwal, a Jasper Place student, described the confusion that swept through classrooms when staff ordered students into lockdown.

"They just said we had to go into a classroom for a lockdown and I think we were all confused why," Dhaliwal said. "At first some people were thinking it was a drill."

The unexpected security measure rattled parents as well. Omar Addali, a parent of a student at the school, received notification of the lockdown and immediately headed to the campus to check on his child's safety.

"You're expecting when you drop your kid off at school [that they'll] be safe," Addali said. "Hopefully it won't happen again."

Investigation Ongoing

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Edmonton Public School Board stated in a release: "The division takes incidents like this very seriously and the safety of students and staff is our top priority. Students and staff were safe as the police worked to resolve the situation."

No additional injuries have been reported. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Edmonton police.
