Edmonton drivers are getting caught running red lights at alarming rates along a busy south-side corridor, with four camera locations accounting for nearly one in every five traffic citations issued across the entire city in 2025.

The Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail intersection cluster—particularly at Whitemud Drive and 34 Avenue—has emerged as Edmonton's most aggressive red light enforcement zone, according to year-end traffic data released by the city.

One Intersection Dominates the Data

The camera positioned at Gateway Boulevard and Whitemud Drive alone issued 2,994 tickets last year, making it the single busiest red light camera site in Edmonton. That's nearly 10 per cent of all red light violations recorded across the city's 92 camera locations.

Combined, the four cameras along this north-south stretch generated 6,574 citations—representing just over 19 per cent of Edmonton's total 34,000-plus red light tickets for the year.

The third most-ticketed location sits at the opposite end of the Gateway Boulevard corridor, where Calgary Trail intersects Whitemud Drive, with 1,565 citations recorded.

What's Driving the Numbers?

Traffic safety officials suggest the concentration of violations reflects the high-volume nature of these intersections, combined with challenging traffic flow patterns during peak hours. Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail serve as major north-south thoroughfares for south Edmonton commuters, particularly those accessing the Whitemud Drive expressway.

The data raises questions about whether these locations warrant additional traffic safety measures beyond camera enforcement—such as improved signage, extended yellow light timing, or traffic pattern adjustments.

For Edmonton motorists, the message is clear: these intersections demand extra caution. A single red light violation can result in fines exceeding $300, plus demerit points on your driving record.
