A pre-dawn fire at a northeast Calgary apartment building left one person hospitalized and forced the evacuation of multiple residences Monday morning.
Calgary Fire Department crews were called to a fourplex in the 400 block of 34th Avenue N.E. shortly before 4 a.m., where they found the building engulfed in flames.
Emergency responders immediately evacuated the affected building and surrounding residences as a precautionary measure while firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
The fire department spent several hours dousing the flames and conducting overhaul operations to prevent rekindling.
One resident was transported to Peter Lougheed Centre in stable condition due to concerns about smoke inhalation, according to Alberta Health Services. Three other individuals were assessed by paramedics at the scene but declined further medical treatment.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Calgary Police Service assisted with the emergency response and evacuation efforts.
The incident highlights the ongoing fire safety challenges faced by older residential buildings in Calgary's established neighbourhoods.
