Calgary police have charged a 22-year-old man following a shooting that erupted outside a popular northeast Calgary restaurant early Sunday morning, marking one of four firearm incidents reported to authorities over a single 48-hour period.
The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. near the Samosa House restaurant located at 4310 104 Avenue Northeast, after an altercation occurred outside the adjacent Head Over Heels lounge. A man was allegedly shot during the confrontation, though he escaped injury.
The suspect fled the scene in a grey 2019 Dodge Charger before police arrived, prompting a rapid response that included assistance from the HAWCS helicopter unit. Officers conducted a traffic stop and took the man into custody shortly after.
Weapon Seized, Serious Charges Laid
Investigators recovered a loaded 9-millimetre Canik TP9sfx handgun from the vehicle. The accused now faces one count each of discharging a firearm with intent and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
The Sunday shooting was one of four firearm-related incidents police responded to between early Friday and early Sunday. While authorities have not disclosed details about injuries from the other shootings, Staff Sergeant Geoff Gawlinski confirmed that investigators have identified suspects or have solid leads in those cases.
Growing Concern Over Gun Violence
"These incidents are deeply concerning," Gawlinski said in a statement. "Anytime a firearm is used, especially in public, it puts innocent people at risk and impacts entire communities."
The incidents highlight an alarming trend. Calgary police have investigated 39 shootings so far this year—a figure that underscores the ongoing challenge of gun violence in the city.
"To address gun violence, we rely on strong community support, and we need the public's help. If you're in the area, please check for CCTV, doorbell or dash cam footage — even small details can make a difference," Gawlinski emphasized.
Community Tips Urged
Police are asking anyone with information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting to come forward. Residents who may have security footage, doorbell camera recordings, or dash cam video are encouraged to report what they've captured.
