Calgary's Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri each recorded two points as the Flames capitalized on Edmonton's struggling defensive corps, which has now allowed 18 goals over their last four games. The loss drops Edmonton to third in the Pacific Division while Calgary moves within striking distance of a wild-card playoff spot.
"We're not protecting our goaltender well enough," said Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch following the defeat. "When you give up quality chances like we did tonight, it's going to cost you games, especially against a team fighting for their playoff lives."
The turning point came midway through the second period when Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse turned the puck over behind his own net, leading directly to Kadri's go-ahead goal. The miscue was emblematic of Edmonton's defensive woes, which have plagued the team throughout March.
Calgary struck first at 8:47 of the opening period when Huberdeau found space in the high slot, beating Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner with a perfectly placed wrist shot. "We knew they were going to push back hard in the third," said Flames captain Mikael Backlund. "Our guys did a great job staying disciplined and not giving them the opportunities they're used to getting."
