CALGARY — The Saskatchewan Roughriders weathered both a brutal prairie wind and a ferocious Calgary comeback to escape McMahon Stadium with a 40-37 overtime victory Saturday night, improving to a perfect 2-0 on the season.
In a game that tested both teams' composure and kicking accuracy, backup quarterback Tommy Stevens punched in the game-winning touchdown in overtime, capping a dramatic finish that saw the Stampeders (0-2) claw back from behind with just seconds remaining in regulation.
Late Drama in the Final Minute
Trailing for most of the contest, Stampeders quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. orchestrated a clutch drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Tevin Jones with under a minute left on the clock, forcing overtime and keeping Calgary's playoff hopes alive — at least for another quarter.
The loss marked Calgary's second heartbreaker in as many weeks, following a narrow 30-28 defeat to Winnipeg. Despite the second-half collapse, Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson acknowledged his team's fight, even as the final result stung.
"Resilient group, we've just got to find a way to win," Dickenson said. "We probably got outplayed, but we did have our chances. We kept fighting, we kept working."
Wind and Conditions Prove Challenging
Gusts exceeding 50 km/h whipped across the field throughout the night, turning McMahon's goalposts into swaying targets and forcing both teams to adjust their kicking strategies. Saskatchewan kicker Alex Hale made good on field goals of 27 and 38 yards but missed from 47 yards into the wind.
Roughriders head coach Corey Mace found humour in the nail-biting finish, joking that the stress had him working through an entire pack of gum.
"I had to put that fifth piece of gum in heading into overtime," Mace said with a laugh. "My jaw's clicking, but the heart's OK."
Schaffer-Baker Shines for Green and White
Saskatchewan's wide receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker was the standout performer, hauling in two touchdown passes while amassing 19 receptions for 295 yards through two games — an impressive start to his season.
"They call me 7-11. I'm open 24 hours. I'm always open," Schaffer-Baker said with trademark confidence.
Running back A.J. Ouellette contributed 84 rushing yards and a two-point convert for the defending Grey Cup champions, while KeeSean Johnson added another touchdown reception.
Calgary's Offensive Spark Fades
Despite showing flashes of explosive play, Calgary couldn't find consistency against Saskatchewan's defence. Quincy Vaughn scored a pair of short-yardage touchdowns for the Stampeders, while Tyreik McAllister produced a spectacular 120-yard touchdown return. Dedrick Mills, the CFL's leading rusher last season, finished with 103 yards on the ground.
The loss leaves Calgary searching for answers after dropping their first two games of the season — a rare occurrence. The Stampeders have only matched this 0-2 start once since 2009.
In other CFL action Saturday, the Edmonton Elks also needed overtime to escape their contest, defeating the Montreal Alouettes 32-29, making it a night of high-stakes drama across Alberta.
