The Calgary Stampeders are still alive — but just barely, and now they must sit and watch as their playoff fate hangs in the balance.
The Red and White delivered a commanding 32-13 victory over the visiting B.C. Lions on Saturday, avoiding immediate elimination from CFL playoff contention. But the win came with a catch: Calgary's post-season hopes now depend entirely on whether the Lions can defeat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Friday.
It's an uncomfortable position for a team fighting for survival. The Stampeders (9-9) have zero control over their own destiny and must hope a division rival delivers the assist they desperately need.
In Limbo During the Bye Week
"It's a little awkward," acknowledged Stampeders quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. "We could have helped ourselves out earlier in the year. You can't go back on it. It is what it is. We're just going to sit back and see what happens."
The regular season conclusion leaves several Western Division scenarios unresolved. Edmonton's Elks (13-4) secured the division crown and will host the divisional final on November 7. The Lions (10-7) clinched second place, guaranteeing them a home semifinal on October 31 — assuming they upset Winnipeg.
Saskatchewan's defending Grey Cup champion Roughriders (9-8) can finish no worse than fourth after their 16-12 victory over Montreal earlier Saturday, securing at least a crossover spot against Toronto.
This means Calgary could potentially finish third or fourth in the West, or tumble entirely out of playoff contention depending on Friday's outcome in Winnipeg.
Regrets Mount as Season-Altering Moments Pile Up
Adams reflected on the frustration of close games lost earlier in the season — contests that could have changed everything.
"We know the West, it's always tight and it's a really good division, really good teams," Adams said. "It just sucks that so many close games we lost early on in the season that could have gone a different way — a play here and a play there. Just can't do anything about the past. Hopefully some things shake our way."
The Stampeders will spend the bye week in an unusual state of suspended animation, unable to influence their own future while waiting for next Friday's Lions-Blue Bombers clash to determine whether their season continues into November or ends in heartbreak.
