The Ottawa Senators' playoff dreams have come to an abrupt and devastating end, eliminated in devastating fashion as the Carolina Hurricanes completed a flawless four-game sweep with a 4-2 victory on Saturday night.

Logan Stankoven proved to be the difference-maker once again, scoring the crucial go-ahead goal midway through the third period as the top-seeded Hurricanes demonstrated why they're among the Eastern Conference's most formidable teams. The Ottawa-based squad never recovered, managing just five goals across the entire series and never once holding a lead against their relentless opponents.

Carolina's Balanced Attack Proves Too Much

Beyond Stankoven's fourth consecutive playoff game with a goal, the Hurricanes' depth showed why they earned the No. 1 seed. Taylor Hall contributed both a goal and an assist, while Sebastian Aho sealed the series fate with two empty-net goals in the final moments. Frederik Andersen stood tall in net, stopping 26 shots to earn the series-clinching victory.

"The Senators came out fighting in what was a physical, hard-nosed contest," observers noted, as Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens kept Ottawa within reach through two periods. However, Carolina's suffocating defence and high-pressure penalty kill ultimately proved insurmountable.

Ottawa's Injury Woes Mount

The Senators' path to upset glory was further complicated by mounting injuries along their blue line. Star defenceman Jake Sanderson joined teammates Artem Zub and Nick Jensen on the sidelines with a concussion suffered in Game 3, continuing a troubling trend that has forced Ottawa to rotate through 12 different defencemen since the Olympic break.

The injury to Sanderson, a smooth-skating 23-year-old who typically anchors Ottawa's defence, proved particularly costly given the Hurricanes' relentless offensive pressure throughout the series.

Historic Collapse Averted

While the Senators' elimination is painful, it remains a rarity in NHL playoff history. Of the 213 teams to fall behind 3-0 in a seven-game series, just four have ever completed a comeback—the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1980 New York Islanders, 2010 Philadelphia Flyers, and 2014 Los Angeles Kings. Ottawa came close last spring against Toronto before ultimately falling in six games.

Carolina moves forward having demonstrated the consistency and depth needed to make a deep playoff run, while Ottawa begins the long process of regrouping and reassessing what went wrong after returning to the post-season.
