A catastrophic multi-vehicle collision in Calgary's northeast Saddle Ridge neighbourhood Thursday afternoon ended in tragedy, with three people confirmed dead and 16 others injured after a transit bus's natural gas tanks ignited in a massive explosion.

The collision unfolded just after 1 p.m. in the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle N.E., near the district fire and police stations, as rush-hour traffic moved through the busy intersection toward 80th Avenue.

How the Deadly Chain Reaction Unfolded

Calgary police laid out a harrowing sequence of events that led to the explosion. The first transit bus, travelling north, struck a truck ahead of it. That truck veered into an adjacent lane, sideswiped an SUV, and collided with the rear of a box truck.

Simultaneously, the first bus continued forward and struck a sedan from behind, pushing the vehicle through the intersection where it collided with another truck. The bus then struck the rear of a second transit bus—a collision that would prove catastrophic.

During the impact between the two buses, the natural gas tanks on the second bus ignited. What followed was terrifying: a significant fire erupted within seconds, intensifying rapidly before erupting in a violent explosion that could be witnessed from blocks away.

The Human Toll

All three fatalities occurred on the second bus. Police have identified the victims and notified their families. The driver of the first bus suffered life-altering injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. The driver of the second bus was able to evacuate the vehicle.

In total, 10 people were transported to hospital by ambulance, with one person in life-threatening condition. One police officer also sustained minor injuries while responding to the scene. The remaining drivers and passengers involved either escaped injury or suffered minor wounds.

Investigation Ongoing—No Cause Determined Yet

Calgary police emphasized Friday that it remains too early to determine what triggered the initial collision. Investigators are examining whether impairment, excessive speed, or driver distraction played a role, but all factors remain under active investigation.

The transit union has called for swift answers, noting that both bus drivers and the riding public need clarity about what caused the disaster so they can travel with confidence on Calgary's transit fleet.

Video footage captured at the scene shows the dramatic moment when a bystander made a daring rescue attempt as flames engulfed the bus—an act of courage amid the chaos and horror.

This report is based on information released by Calgary Police Service and Calgary Fire Department on Friday. The investigation remains active.
