A devastating highway collision northeast of Calgary has claimed two lives and left three others fighting for recovery, including a child in critical condition who was airlifted to hospital by STARS.
Airdrie RCMP responded to the crash at 10:39 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Highways 9 and 564, approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Calgary. The collision involved a GMC truck towing a trailer and a Ford Escape.
The Victims and Injured
Two women traveling in the Ford Escape were killed in the crash—one pronounced dead at the scene and another who succumbed to injuries at hospital. A man and a child from the same vehicle were transported to hospital in critical condition. The child was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance due to the severity of injuries.
The driver of the GMC truck was hospitalized in serious condition.
The collision sent shockwaves through the community as emergency responders worked to extract occupants from the wreckage. Highway 564 remained closed Sunday following the incident as investigators examined the scene, but was reopened to traffic Sunday evening.
