A Calgary man faces serious charges after allegedly driving at high speed through an active crime scene where police were investigating a fatal crash on Stoney Trail northeast Tuesday night.

The 39-year-old was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and obstructing a peace officer following the incident, which occurred around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Calgary Police Service had closed a section of southbound Stoney Trail near McKnight Boulevard northeast after a deadly collision around 11 p.m. Tuesday. Officers had erected barricades and were conducting their investigation when the accused driver approached the scene at a high rate of speed and drove through the restricted area.

The dangerous manoeuvre put officers' lives at risk and potentially compromised crucial evidence from the original fatal crash, police said.

"The barricades are there for a reason and there is no excuse for drivers to ignore them," said Inspector Robbie Patterson of the Calgary Police Service traffic unit. "Police often close roads after collisions to protect the officers at work and the integrity of the investigation."

The driver was immediately arrested and his vehicle was seized by police. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

The southbound section of Stoney Trail remained closed for approximately six hours while investigators processed the fatal crash scene. Police have not yet released details about what caused the deadly collision that prompted the road closure.

Calgary Police are asking anyone with information about either incident to contact them at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.calgarycrimestoppers.org, or through the Crime Stoppers mobile app.
