A 16-year-old Edmonton girl has been fatally shot outside a northeast residential complex, leaving her family and community devastated by the loss of what relatives describe as a vibrant, caring presence in their lives.
Jazmin Dhesi was pronounced dead at the scene outside Park Hill Condominiums in the Hairsine neighbourhood early Sunday morning, shortly after neighbours reported hearing gunshots at approximately 7 a.m. Despite immediate intervention by police and paramedics, she could not be saved.
Edmonton Police Service's homicide unit has taken over the investigation. On Tuesday afternoon, authorities announced they had made an arrest in connection with the shooting, though they declined to release further details citing the accused's status as a youth under Canadian law.
A Life Cut Short
According to neighbours, Dhesi was visiting a friend at the complex and did not reside there. Her family has painted a portrait of a spirited teenager whose energy and compassion touched everyone around her.
"She was just the light. She was really funny. She was always caring," a family member told media, speaking on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns. "She was really kind and she wanted to be friends with everybody, so she would talk to everybody."
The family described Dhesi as someone who loved creative pursuits—particularly doing hair and makeup—and had promised to teach her sister how to apply false lashes before she entered high school. Beyond her day-to-day passions, Dhesi harboured ambitious dreams for her future, including a goal to study architecture and eventually travel to New Zealand.
"We're a regular, loving family. She was loved by both her parents and all her family in ways I can't even express. She was not grown up in a broken home, she grew up in ours, and it was amazing … it's just hard — because she's so innocent and she had nothing to do with this."
Community to Gather in Remembrance
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, with police indicating they will release additional details once findings are reviewed. Dhesi's family is planning a candlelight vigil for August 24 to honour her memory and celebrate her life.
