The Calgary Flames have secured a promising defensive prospect from their own backyard, signing Calgary Hitmen captain Axel Hurtig to a three-year entry-level contract worth $990,000 per season.
The club announced the signing Wednesday morning, with the deal set to begin in the 2026-27 season.
Hurtig, a 6-foot-4, 217-pound defenceman from Hogas, Sweden, has emerged as one of the Western Hockey League's most reliable shutdown defenders during his two seasons with the Hitmen. The left-shot blueliner was selected by Calgary in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Draft following a standout performance with Sweden's Under-18 national team, which captured silver at the World Championships.
From Sweden to Cowtown
After spending his draft-plus-one season with Rögle in Sweden while recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, Hurtig made the jump to North American hockey in 2024-25 as an import player with the Hitmen. The transition proved seamless as he quickly adapted to the smaller ice surface and more physical style of play.
Hurtig's leadership qualities became evident early, culminating in his appointment as Hitmen captain at the start of the 2025-26 campaign. Over his two WHL seasons, he has posted modest offensive numbers with 35 points in two seasons, but his true value lies in his defensive reliability and physical presence.
The Swedish defender maintained a combined plus-60 rating over two seasons despite significant roster turnover, providing crucial stability for the Hitmen's blue line. He also represented Sweden at the 2025 World Junior Championship, further showcasing his international pedigree.
Filling a Pipeline Need
Hurtig's skill set addresses a specific need within Calgary's prospect pool. While the Flames' defensive pipeline features several mobile, puck-moving prospects, Hurtig brings old-school defensive fundamentals and intimidating size to complement those players.
His positioning, reach, and willingness to engage physically make him an intriguing developmental piece as the organization continues building depth on the blue line. The fact that he impressed Flames management during training camp before returning to junior hockey speaks to his professional readiness.
The contract does not take effect until next season, meaning Calgary maintains 48 active contracts with two slots still available for immediate use. Hurtig remains with the Hitmen for their playoff run, where they currently hold a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round of WHL post-season play.
The signing represents another step in the Flames' commitment to developing prospects within their own market, following the recent contract extension with Jonathan Castagna.
