Calgary has entered a new era of international connectivity. On Sunday, October 25, 2026, Etihad Airways—the national airline of the United Arab Emirates—made history by launching its inaugural direct flight from Calgary International Airport to Abu Dhabi, marking the first-ever non-stop service between Western Canada and the UAE.
The milestone arrival was celebrated by provincial and airport officials, including Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Joseph Schow, Calgary Airports President and CEO Chris Dinsdale, and Tourism Calgary leadership. Media representatives toured the carrier's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner before the flight departed, getting an up-close look at the modern aircraft that will serve the route.
A Gateway for Two Energy Powerhouses
The new route positions Calgary as a critical hub connecting Alberta's energy sector with one of the world's leading petroleum producers. According to Etihad Airways leadership, the service creates a direct corridor between two major energy centres, potentially unlocking significant trade and investment opportunities.
"The launch of Etihad Airways' flight from Calgary to Abu Dhabi demonstrates the demand from around the world to do business with Alberta, and the growing relationship our province has built with the United Arab Emirates," Minister Schow said in a statement. "As two of the world's foremost energy producers, there is great potential for collaboration and economic benefit for both jurisdictions."
For business travellers, the direct route eliminates layovers and simplifies logistics. For leisure passengers, the connection offers easy access to the UAE's warm climate and serves as a launchpad for exploring the Canadian Rockies from the opposite direction.
Part of a Larger North American Expansion
This Calgary route is part of Etihad Airways' broader North American growth strategy. The carrier already operates services to Toronto and six U.S. destinations, with this newest addition strengthening its continental presence. The service underscores Calgary's rising importance on the global aviation map.
"This direct route creates a valuable link between Alberta and the UAE, making it easier for businesses, investors and travellers to connect," Schow noted. "This improved access means more opportunities to attract investment, build new trade and commercial relationships and bring more visitors to our province."
The launch reflects Calgary's evolution as a destination that extends far beyond energy sector headquarters—it is increasingly becoming an international business and tourism gateway.
