An Edmonton resident faces serious criminal charges following a fatal shooting in Inuvik earlier this week that has left the northern Alberta community reeling.
Joshua Rath, 25, has been charged with murder and two counts of discharging a firearm with intent in connection with the incident that occurred Monday, September 14, on Bompas Street. The charges mark an escalation in what began as a response to shots fired inside a residence early that morning.
Inuvik RCMP received the emergency call at approximately 7 a.m. on Monday. When officers arrived at the scene, both the victim and suspects had already fled the residence. The male victim was located shortly after and transported to Inuvik Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigation Leads to Charges
Following the initial response, RCMP officers arrested four suspects by Tuesday. After further investigation, three of those individuals were released without charge, leaving Rath as the sole person facing charges in the matter.
Rath remains in custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance in Territorial Court on October 14. The case is expected to move through the northern court system in the coming weeks.
The fatal shooting marks another serious incident in Inuvik and underscores ongoing public safety concerns in northern Alberta communities. RCMP have not released additional details about the circumstances leading to the shooting or the identity of the victim.
