In a thrilling Labour Day showdown that had McMahon Stadium buzzing, the Edmonton Elks pulled off an improbable comeback, erasing an 18-point deficit to defeat the Calgary Stampeders 38-28 in CFL action Monday evening.
The Elks' remarkable turnaround — their third consecutive come-from-behind victory this season — was powered by a devastating fourth-quarter assault. Edmonton erupted for 24 points in the final 10 minutes, completely flipping the script on a game that appeared to be slipping away.
Trailing by 14 points with just 10 minutes remaining, Edmonton's offence shifted into high gear. Running back ShunDerrick Powell punched in a three-yard touchdown to spark the rally, followed by a stunning 50-yard rushing touchdown from Justin Rankin that gave the Elks their first lead of the afternoon with just over four minutes on the clock.
"This team has shown incredible resilience," said Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo, who completed 17 of 31 passes for 181 yards and two touchdown throws. "We never stopped believing."
Vincent Blanchard's perfect converting kept Edmonton's scoring machine rolling, while his 52-yard field goal in the fourth quarter — following a key turnover recovery — proved crucial in narrowing Calgary's lead at a critical moment.
For Calgary, the late collapse was devastating. Despite dominating much of the first half, the Stampeders (5-7) couldn't generate any scoring opportunities in the final four minutes as momentum swung decisively toward Edmonton.
Vernon Adams Jr., making his return to the Stampeders' lineup after sitting out last week with a concussion, completed 15 of 29 passes for 214 yards and two touchdown passes. Adams took a shot to the helmet late in the first quarter when Elks linebacker Nick Anderson was flagged for roughing the passer.
Receiver Jalen Philpot and Clark Barnes caught scoring passes for Calgary, while Quincy Vaughn added a short-yardage touchdown. Kicker Rene Paredes contributed three converts and two field goals (36 and 42 yards).
The victory propels Edmonton (9-3) to the top of the West Division, maintaining their lead over the Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-4). Calgary remains in fourth place in the division standings.
This wasn't the first time the Elks have demonstrated this season's signature resilience. In their previous contest against Winnipeg, Edmonton overcame a 16-point deficit to secure another dramatic win — a pattern that's making this club increasingly dangerous as the season progresses.
An announced crowd of 16,346 packed McMahon Stadium for the holiday matchup, providing plenty of noise but unable to will the home side to victory.
