The holiday, Nowruz (pronounced “know-ruse”), begins at the vernal equinox and is celebrated by observing centuries-old traditions.

“Celebrating Nowruz this year is not just something that you do out of habit,” said Kara Abdolmaleki, a PhD graduate from the University of Alberta.
