The Alberta NDP has claimed a surprising victory in the Calgary-Shaw byelection, with candidate Kyle Campbell narrowly defeating the United Conservative Party's Mike Derry in what political observers are calling a significant test of voter sentiment in the province.
According to unofficial results from Elections Alberta, Campbell secured 7,461 votes—approximately 47 per cent of the 16,002 ballots cast—giving him a razor-thin 582-vote margin over Derry, who garnered 6,879 votes.
The win marks the first time the NDP has held Calgary-Shaw since the party's historic 2015 "orange wave" that brought them to government. The UCP claimed the seat in both 2019 and 2023.
A Tight Race with Major Implications
Addressing supporters at a southeast Calgary pub Monday evening, Campbell emphasized the personal nature of his commitment to the riding.
"I have always had running for political office on the bucket list, and it showed up really fast, but I'm glad that we get to focus on what truly matters. It's our family, it's our friends, it's our community," Campbell said. "This opportunity is a chance to live what I believe in my heart, which is that leadership is about service."
The byelection was triggered when former UCP MLA and cabinet minister Rebecca Schulz resigned earlier this year. The timing carries added weight—occurring just over a month before Alberta's October 19 provincial referendum, the contest has been closely watched as a barometer of public opinion on the governing UCP.
Other Candidates and Turnout
The race saw a crowded field. Kyle Joseph of the Progressive Party of Alberta finished third with 978 votes, followed by Alberta Liberal Party Leader John Roggeveen with 602 votes. Independent candidate Rolly Ashdown rounded out the field with 82 votes.
Preliminary data shows 6,955 advance votes were cast, representing approximately 16 per cent of eligible electors in the riding.
At a UCP watch party in southeast Calgary, Derry acknowledged Campbell's victory and thanked his campaign team for their extensive ground effort.
"The team has been door-knocking for the last, I think 243 days. We were listening to their voice. I had a lot of support that came down and I'm very, very thankful for the team," Derry said.
Official election results will be confirmed on September 24. The byelection outcome may prompt discussion across Calgary Forums and other community spaces as Albertans continue to debate the direction of the province.
