A tense confrontation in southwest Calgary on Monday morning ended with an officer wounded and a suspect dead, according to the Calgary Police Service.
The incident unfolded around 11:45 a.m. when officers initiated a traffic stop on a black truck in the Spruce Cliff area near Edworthy Park. As the stop was underway, an occupant of the vehicle suddenly exited and opened fire on police, striking one officer twice before fleeing on foot into the nearby park toward the Bow River.
Chaotic Scene Unfolds
"During this time, it is believed the suspect continued to actively shoot at pursuing members and nearby civilians," Calgary Police Service officials stated in a release. The confrontation escalated when the suspect allegedly carjacked a civilian vehicle and drove through Edworthy Park until the stolen vehicle became stuck. He then abandoned the car and resumed fleeing on foot.
Inspector Darren Smith confirmed that officers returned fire during the encounter. "The offender discharged multiple rounds at officers, who returned fire," Smith said.
The pursuit ultimately ended at the Bow River, where the suspect was later found deceased before officers could apprehend him. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
The injured officer received medical attention for injuries sustained during the shooting. No information has been released regarding the officer's condition or the identity of the suspect.
