The Edmonton Oilers are continuing to bolster their prospect pipeline, announcing Thursday the signing of forward Owen Michaels to a one-year entry-level contract. The deal takes effect immediately for the 2025-26 season.

Michaels, 23, arrives in the Oilers organization fresh off a standout collegiate career at Western Michigan University, where he served as captain of the Broncos. In 2024-25, he led the program to its first-ever NCAA Frozen Four championship — a historic run that cemented his reputation as one of the top American college forwards available this spring.

A Frozen Four Hero

Michaels was nothing short of spectacular during Western Michigan's championship run. He scored twice in a semifinal clash against Denver, including the double-overtime winner that punched the Broncos' ticket to the final. He then followed that performance with two more goals in a dominant 6-2 victory over Boston University in the championship game, earning Most Outstanding Player honours for the tournament.

That Boston University squad was no slouch — it featured current Oilers prospect Quinn Hutson, as well as NHL rookies Ryan Greene and Tom Willander, making Michaels' performance all the more impressive.

This past season, Michaels posted 13 goals and 26 points, earning a Hobey Baker Award nomination — the honour given annually to college hockey's best player. Denver did get some measure of revenge on the Broncos this year, eliminating Western Michigan in the regional round to advance to the Frozen Four.

A Long Road to the NHL

The right-shot forward from Northville, Michigan, took the long route through the junior ranks before arriving at Western Michigan. He began his career with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL before spending two seasons with the Bismarck Bobcats in the NAHL from 2020 to 2022. He returned to the USHL for the 2022-23 season with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, where he recorded 15 goals and 26 points in 46 games before making the jump to the NCAA. Michaels will turn 24 on May 1.

Part of a Busy Spring for Edmonton

The Michaels signing is part of a flurry of activity for Edmonton this spring. Last week, the club inked Czech defenceman Tomáš Cibulka, and on Tuesday, former seventh-round pick William Nicholl — out of the OHL's London Knights — signed his entry-level contract.

How Michaels will fit into the Oilers' plans remains to be seen. With his contract covering only the remainder of this season, his deployment — whether at the NHL level or with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors — has yet to be determined by the organization.
