Alberta voters casting ballots by mail for the upcoming referendum need to pay close attention — more than 3,000 mail-in ballot packages have already been flagged as invalid due to errors, Elections Alberta officials warned this week.

The problems vary, but they centre on submission mistakes that could derail your vote. Missing declaration forms, incomplete paperwork, or identification issues are the leading culprits, according to the province's election administrator.

"Voters who receive notice of an error still have time to correct it," Elections Alberta confirmed, encouraging Albertans to respond promptly via email with the required documentation.

What's at Stake on October 19

Albertans will vote on a series of referendum questions on October 19, with one central issue dominating the ballot: whether the province should begin the process toward holding a second, binding referendum on leaving Confederation.

The referendum represents a significant moment in Alberta's political landscape, and officials are working hard to ensure every eligible vote counts.

The Numbers Behind the Push

Elections Alberta has verified roughly one-third of the 652,000 ballot packages distributed to eligible voters across the province. With the deadline fast approaching, the pace of verification continues to accelerate.

To handle the massive undertaking, the province is ramping up hiring efforts. More than two-thirds of the 60,000 workers needed have already been brought on board, with recruitment continuing in the final countdown to voting day.

"Voters who have submitted mail-in ballots should watch for any communication from Elections Alberta regarding errors," officials advised. "If contacted, respond immediately to avoid your ballot being rejected."

For Albertans who haven't yet requested mail-in ballots, time is running short. Elections Alberta recommends checking the provincial election website for current deadlines and eligibility information.
