A 34-year-old man from Prince Edward Island has been arrested in connection with the murder of an Edmonton woman whose body remains missing along the Highway 2 corridor, Alberta RCMP confirmed Thursday.
The suspect, whose name has not been released pending formal charges, was taken into custody Wednesday evening following a coordinated investigation between multiple provincial police forces. RCMP say the case spans from the Atlantic provinces to Alberta, involving what investigators describe as a cross-country crime spree.
"This investigation has involved significant cooperation between law enforcement agencies across the country," said RCMP Spokesperson Corporal Jennifer MacDonald during a press conference in Edmonton. "We are treating this as a homicide investigation and are actively searching for the victim's remains."
The Edmonton woman, identified as 28-year-old Sarah Chen, was reported missing by family members on March 15 after failing to return home from work. Security footage later placed her vehicle at a gas station near Red Deer, approximately 150 kilometres south of Edmonton along Highway 2.
RCMP search teams have deployed ground crews, canine units, and aerial surveillance along a 200-kilometre stretch of Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary. The search is focusing on rural areas and rest stops where investigators believe the victim's body may have been disposed of.
"We are asking anyone who may have travelled Highway 2 between March 15 and March 20 and noticed anything suspicious to contact police immediately," MacDonald said. "Even the smallest detail could be crucial to this investigation."
Court documents suggest the suspect and victim may have met through social media, though investigators have not confirmed the nature of their relationship. The PEI man allegedly travelled to Alberta under false pretenses before the incident occurred.
The arrest comes after Edmonton Police Service initially handled the missing person case before transferring it to RCMP Major Crimes Unit when evidence suggested the investigation extended beyond city limits. DNA evidence reportedly links the suspect to Chen's abandoned vehicle, which was discovered burned in a rural area near Innisfree, Alberta.
Calgary-based community safety advocates are urging residents to remain vigilant when meeting people online. "This tragic case highlights the importance of meeting strangers in public places and informing trusted contacts about your whereabouts," said local safety coordinator Maria Santos.
The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in Edmonton Provincial Court on Monday. RCMP say additional charges may be laid as the investigation continues.
Chen's family has established a memorial fund through local faith communities, with services being coordinated through several Edmonton churches. The search for her remains continues with additional resources being deployed along the Highway 2 corridor this weekend.
