A 19-year-old Quebec man was fatally shot during a robbery in the Dominican Republic while vacationing with his brother, according to local police who have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing.

Tristan Primeau-Pointras of Sainte-Julienne, Que., died from a gunshot wound sustained during the early morning hours of Monday while he and his brother were returning to their hotel from a restaurant, Dominican Republic National Police said in a statement Wednesday.

The brothers were travelling on the Puerto Plata–Maimon highway when they were "intercepted by the alleged aggressors" who were attempting to rob them, police said. The suspects were reportedly travelling on a motorcycle when one of them fired the fatal shot.

Primeau-Pointras was staying at the Riu Bachata hotel at the time of the incident, according to the preliminary police report.

Two Arrested After Identification

Dominican authorities have arrested Jordi Yúnior Severiano, 23, and Rangel Merete Rodríguez, 30, in connection with the killing. Primeau-Pointras's brother identified both suspects in a police lineup, investigators said.

"The detainees are in custody and will be brought to justice in the coming hours, while investigations continue to fully clarify the circumstances of the case," police stated.

During the investigation, officers also seized a small blue package containing more than 90 portions of suspected marijuana and $905 in local currency.

Community Mourns Loss

The Town of Sainte-Julienne expressed its condolences in a Facebook post, writing in French: "We wish to offer our most sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and all those affected by this tragedy. The Juliennes community is wholeheartedly with them."

Dominican National Police said they are actively working to ensure the crime does not go unpunished as the investigation continues.
