Thousands of Safeway employees across Alberta have sent a strong message to management: they're prepared to walk off the job if fair contract terms aren't reached.
A decisive strike authorization vote released by UFCW Local 401 on Saturday shows overwhelming support for labour action, with Calgary workers voting 87 per cent in favour, Edmonton exceeding 90 per cent, and other Alberta regions surpassing 95 per cent. Across specific bargaining units, retail employees backed a strike at 86 per cent, while meat department workers in southern Alberta voted 93 per cent in favour and northern meat workers at 90 per cent.
The vote sends negotiators back to the bargaining table next week with a clear mandate from the union's approximately 10,000 members in Alberta Safeway stores.
What Workers Are Fighting For
Safeway employees are demanding several key improvements, according to UFCW Local 401 president Thomas Hesse.
"They want a fair agreement that allows them to support their families and recognizes the value of the work they do every day. They want to be able to afford the food they stock on the shelves, to work in safe stores and to know they have job security moving forward."
The union's core demands centre on wages that keep pace with inflation, expanded benefits packages, stronger job security protections, and measurable improvements to store safety standards—concerns that have resonated deeply with members across the province.

The labour push has gained traction beyond union halls. The UFCW's Fair Checkout campaign has attracted support from around 10,000 customers who stand with Safeway workers, signalling broader community concern about retail working conditions and affordability pressures facing essential workers.
With negotiations resuming in the coming days, the scale of this authorization vote leaves little room for doubt: Alberta's Safeway workforce is united and ready to take action if management won't meet them halfway on compensation, security, and workplace safety.
