A catastrophic collision on Calgary's Stoney Trail Sunday night has claimed four lives and left four others hospitalized, with investigators now examining whether speed and impairment played a role in the tragedy.
Calgary Police Service responded to the scene near Stoney Trail and 90th Avenue S.W. around 11 p.m., where a southbound Mercedes-Benz was operating in the wrong direction across multiple lanes. The vehicle, carrying a 30-year-old driver, a female passenger, and a child, collided head-on with a Subaru operated by a 43-year-old man.
"Following the impact, both vehicles caught fire," Calgary police stated in their incident report. "A Chevrolet Equinox operated by a 52-year-old woman then struck the Mercedes-Benz."
All three occupants of the Mercedes-Benz and the Subaru driver were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and three passengers from the Chevrolet were transported to hospital; one victim sustained injuries described as life-altering but not life-threatening.
Firefighters Battle Intense Flames
Calgary Fire Department crews arrived to find two of the three vehicles fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters immediately deployed aggressive fire suppression while simultaneously conducting rapid vehicle searches and providing emergency medical care to survivors.
"The severity and speed of the incident created an incredibly challenging scene for first responders," a fire department spokesperson noted in their release.
Investigation Underway
Calgary police are investigating impairment and excessive speed as contributing factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved.
The collision serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by dangerous driving on Calgary's busy ring road network. Stoney Trail, one of the city's most critical traffic corridors, carries tens of thousands of vehicles daily.
