Edmonton police have laid multiple criminal charges against a teenager following a stabbing incident at Jasper Place High School on Friday that sent one student to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The attack unfolded just before noon on April 10, 2026, when a verbal argument between two 16-year-old boys escalated into violence. According to Edmonton Police Service, the victim attempted to walk away from the confrontation, but the suspect pursued and attacked him with a weapon.

"Several youths at the school immediately intervened and tried to restrain the suspect, but he managed to break free and flee the premises," police said in a statement Monday.

School staff and the school resource officer (SRO) provided life-saving assistance to the injured student while staff secured the building. Jasper Place High School was placed under lockdown as officers responded to the scene. Police located and apprehended the suspect nearby shortly after.

The wounded student was transported to hospital where he was initially treated for life-threatening injuries. He has since been released and is recovering at home.

The 16-year-old suspect has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, and criminal harassment.

"We are grateful for the immediate life-saving actions of school staff and our SRO, as well as the rapid response of our frontline patrol members and school partners," said Edmonton Police Service Staff Sergeant Derek Onysko in a statement.
