Vancouver-based agricultural technology company Miraterra has successfully closed a $16-million seed extension round to advance its innovative soil measurement technology and expand its customer base across North America.

The funding round, led by Silicon Valley's At One Ventures, included participation from existing investors S2G Investments, Sitka Foundation, and iSelect, along with new backer Farm Credit Canada, which also provided additional debt financing. This brings Miraterra's total funding to nearly $40 million.

Over the past three years, Miraterra has transformed from a single-product company offering a digital microscope called the Digitizer into a comprehensive soil analysis platform. The company now provides end-to-end soil measurement capabilities spanning satellite chemistry analysis and biological assessment.

"We don't think that there's going to be changes in the way that people are stewarding the land without better insight," said CEO Nate Kelly in a recent interview. "The insight that we're now able to generate with our full stack of technology, I think, is second to none."

Expanding Through Strategic Acquisition

Miraterra's rapid growth accelerated following its acquisition of assets from American soil biology company Trace Genomics over the summer. The Vancouver firm purchased Trace's intellectual property, analytical tools, and laboratories in Ames, Iowa, for an undisclosed amount.

Kelly explained that soil chemistry represents only half the equation for proper land management. Traditional methods that simply measure carbon or nitrogen levels fail to account for the microbial communities that truly determine soil health.

"Trace did what we describe as full shotgun metagenomics, building a database of every piece of biology contained in soil," Kelly said. The acquisition enables Miraterra to provide farmers with a complete picture of soil health by tracking both chemical levels and associated biological activity.

Technology Integration and Market Position

The company has built its comprehensive platform by integrating advanced remote sensing tools that utilize satellite and LIDAR imaging, decoded through artificial intelligence algorithms. This technology stack positions Miraterra as a leader in precision agriculture solutions.

Miraterra operates as an independent subsidiary of Vancouver AgTech firm Terramera, which has evolved into an intellectual property holding company. The soil analysis company was spun out in January 2023 to focus exclusively on soil composition analysis.

For Calgary-area farmers and agricultural professionals seeking land management solutions, comprehensive soil data can inform critical decisions about crop planning and property investments. Platforms like CalgaryFinder.com already provide detailed property information for agricultural land purchases, while advanced soil analysis adds another layer of valuable data.

Future Growth Plans

The 50-person company, which recently began generating revenue, plans to use the new funding to accelerate deployment of its Digitizer technology and demonstrate its full-stack soil measurement capabilities to more customers across Canada and the United States.

As agricultural technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, farmers require reliable connectivity to access real-time soil data and analysis. Rural Alberta operations depend on strong internet infrastructure from providers like WestNet Wireless to maintain connectivity with advanced agricultural monitoring systems.

The agricultural sector's growing reliance on data-driven decision making extends beyond soil analysis to equipment management. Just as farmers need detailed soil reports, those purchasing used farming equipment can benefit from comprehensive vehicle history reports through services like FullVIN.com to ensure reliable machinery investments.

Miraterra's success reflects Canada's growing prominence in agricultural technology innovation, with Vancouver emerging as a key hub for AgTech development alongside traditional centres in Ontario and Quebec.
