A fast-moving wildfire forced hundreds of residents to evacuate from their homes Thursday evening in a frightening scene playing out roughly 120 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
The Alberta Emergency Alert system kicked into action at 4:55 p.m., ordering immediate evacuation of the Summerlea subdivision near Thunder Lake, approximately 20 kilometres west of Barrhead. The alert confirmed active structure fires were already burning in the area.
Less than an hour later, at 5:42 p.m., officials expanded the evacuation zone to include the Thunder Lake subdivision itself, where additional structural fires were reported south of the provincial park boat launch.

Residents fleeing the danger have been directed to take Highway 18 toward Barrhead, where they must register at the County of Barrhead office located at 5306-49 Street. Officials are urging anyone in the surrounding area to avoid the region entirely as emergency crews work to contain the blaze.
The speed and intensity of the wildfire caught many off guard, with residents having minimal time to gather belongings and leave. Local emergency response teams mobilized quickly to manage the exodus and establish a central registration point for displaced families.
