Calgary International Airport is embarking on an ambitious multi-year transformation that will reshape the passenger experience at YYC, airport leadership announced this week.

The Calgary Airport Authority revealed an aggressive capital investment plan focused entirely on modernizing the domestic terminal—a facility that officials say has been crying out for upgrades. The comprehensive renovation will touch all three domestic concourses and introduce streamlined passenger flow, enhanced security, and entirely rebuilt facilities.

Security Line Revolution Coming This Year

The most immediate change passengers will notice is the completion of Phase 2 of the centralized security screening project. This initiative consolidates three separate security checkpoints into a single, unified screening area—a move designed to dramatically increase capacity and reduce wait times during peak travel periods.

"We're re-imagining the flow of the domestic terminal," said Calgary Airport Authority President and CEO Chris Dinsdale during the organization's annual general meeting Thursday. "This is about creating a centre of excellence."

Concourse B: From Hailstorm Damage to Modern Marvel

Perhaps the most dramatic recovery story involves Concourse B, which suffered catastrophic damage during the devastating August 2024 hailstorm that battered Calgary. Rather than simply patching the damage, airport officials decided to completely rebuild the concourse from the ground up.

Significant progress has already been made in 2025, including the replacement of a 60,000-square-foot roof. By 2027, travellers will walk into what Dinsdale describes as "in effect, a brand-new concourse."

"If you went through it, you would not recognize it. It's completely emptied out. It looks gorgeous. This is going to be one heck of a concourse," Dinsdale told the AGM crowd.

A Five-Year Vision for Calgary's Aviation Hub

The domestic terminal overhaul is part of a broader capital investment strategy for YYC that extends well beyond passenger-facing improvements. The airport authority is also highlighting investments in aviation infrastructure, including runway improvements and expanded technical facilities that position Calgary as a growing hub for aircraft maintenance and pilot training.

Industry partners like Lufthansa Technik and CAE are expanding operations at the airport, creating jobs and driving economic activity in the region. These investments signal confidence in Calgary's role in Canada's aviation sector.

For Albertans and regular YYC travellers, the next five years will mean some construction disruption—but airport officials insist the end result will be worth the temporary inconvenience. A modern, efficient domestic terminal could boost Calgary's competitive position in attracting new airlines, routes, and passengers.

The Calgary Airport Authority continues to position YYC as a modern, passenger-centric facility that reflects the city's growth and importance within Canada's transportation network.
