The NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Tournament got underway Thursday with Calgary Flames prospects making their mark across multiple teams competing for college hockey's ultimate prize.
Eight Flames prospects are spread across six different teams in this year's tournament, with five seeing action in Thursday's opening round games. The results set up intriguing matchups for regional finals, including a potential showdown between Flames draft picks.
Quinnipiac Survives Providence Comeback
Ethan Wyttenbach's Quinnipiac Bobcats survived a dramatic third-period comeback attempt to defeat Providence 5-2. After a scoreless first period, the Bobcats appeared to cruise with three unanswered goals in the second frame from Elliott Groenewold, Chris Pelosi, and Antonin Verreault.
However, Providence mounted a furious rally in the final period. Logan Sawyer and John Mustard scored within four minutes of each other to cut Quinnipiac's lead to 3-2, creating a tense finish.
The game's turning point came when Wyttenbach took a two-minute penalty for an illegal check to the head. After successfully killing the penalty, the Flames' 2025 fifth-round pick stepped out of the penalty box, received a pass, and buried his 25th goal of the season to seal the victory. An empty-net goal provided the final margin.
North Dakota Advances Past Merrimack
In a battle featuring four Flames prospects, North Dakota eliminated Merrimack's surprising tournament run with a 3-0 victory. The Fighting Hawks got goals from Cody Croal early in the first period and two more in the third to advance.
Merrimack, featuring Trevor Hoskin, nearly tied the game late in the second period but was denied by a quick whistle that nullified what appeared to be a legitimate goal. Despite the setback, the Warriors couldn't find the equalizer against North Dakota's defence.
None of the four Flames prospects in the game—Abram Wiebe, Cole Reschny, and Cade Littler for North Dakota, and Hoskin for Merrimack—registered points in the contest.
Friday's Action Features More Flames Talent
The tournament continues Friday with eight teams in action, including three more Flames prospects. Luke Misa and Penn State face Minnesota Duluth at 7:00 PM MT, with the winner likely meeting Henry Mews' Michigan squad in the next round.
Defending champion Western Michigan takes on Minnesota State at 12:30 PM MT, while Eric Jamieson's Denver battles Jonathan Castagna's Cornell in another Flames prospect matchup.
The victories by Quinnipiac and North Dakota set up a regional final between Wyttenbach and Reschny, giving Calgary fans a guaranteed representative in the Frozen Four conversation.
