A Pattern That's Hard to Dismiss
This is not the first time observers have noted the correlation. When Coffey stepped into the coaching role early in the 2023-24 season, virtually every Oilers defenceman on the roster showed measurable improvement in his individual play. The group's performance lifted noticeably, and Edmonton's overall defensive structure became more reliable down the stretch.
Now, heading into the 2025-26 playoff push, the pattern appears to be repeating itself.
The Oilers' blue line is finally performing at the level many expected when the season opened — and Paul Coffey seems to be a significant reason why.
Health and Timing Align
Part of the improvement may also be attributed to roster health. The Oilers' defensive group has been plagued by injuries throughout the season, with key players missing significant stretches. For what may be the first time all year, the blue line is relatively whole — a factor that cannot be overlooked when evaluating the recent surge in performance.
Still, coincidence or not, the numbers and the eye test both point to a group that has found its footing at precisely the moment it needs to most, with the Stanley Cup playoffs just around the corner.
If Edmonton is to make a deep postseason run, the blue line will need to continue playing at this level — and if the last few seasons are any indication, Coffey's steadying influence may be exactly what keeps them there.
