The Edmonton Oilers have signed promising Czech defenceman Tom Cibulka to a three-year entry-level contract, the team announced Friday afternoon. The 20-year-old from Ostrava has been turning heads in European hockey circles with his combination of size, skating ability, and offensive instincts from the blue line.

Cibulka, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 205 pounds, spent the 2025-26 season playing for HC Vítkovice Ridera in the Czech Extraliga, where he recorded 8 goals and 22 assists in 52 games. His impressive campaign caught the attention of NHL scouts, with the Oilers ultimately winning the race for his signature.

"Tom is an exciting young defenceman who brings a unique skill set to our organization," said Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman. "His ability to contribute offensively while maintaining strong defensive positioning makes him a valuable addition to our prospect pipeline. We're thrilled to have him join the Oilers family."

The left-shot defenceman has represented the Czech Republic at various international tournaments, including the World Junior Championships where he served as an alternate captain. His leadership qualities and two-way play have made him one of the most sought-after European prospects available.

Cibulka's signing addresses a key organizational need for the Oilers, who have been looking to bolster their defensive prospect depth. The team's development staff believes his European professional experience will help accelerate his transition to North American hockey.

"I'm incredibly excited to join such a historic franchise," Cibulka said through a translator. "The opportunity to learn from players like Darnell Nurse and Mattias Ekholm while developing my game in Edmonton is a dream come true. I can't wait to get started."

The Czech defenceman is expected to report to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League for the remainder of the season, with the possibility of making his NHL debut before the campaign concludes. His entry-level contract carries an average annual value of $925,000 at the NHL level.

Oilers Head Coach Kris Knoblauch expressed enthusiasm about the signing, noting Cibulka's versatility and hockey intelligence. "He's shown the ability to quarterback a power play and move the puck effectively under pressure," Knoblauch said. "Those are valuable assets in today's NHL."

The signing represents another step in the Oilers' continued effort to build organizational depth while remaining competitive at the NHL level. With Cibulka's addition, Edmonton now has one of the more promising collections of defensive prospects in the Western Conference.

Cibulka becomes the third Czech player currently in the Oilers organization, joining forward prospects who have found success transitioning from European leagues to North American hockey. His development will be closely monitored as the team looks to maintain its competitive window while building for the future.
